WOMEN’S INITIATIVES COMMITTEE

The Mandate of the WIC is to identify hidden and neglected issues that confront women in our city. The group identifies those issues related to health, poverty, women’s services and education and assesses how the RCT can make a difference.

CENTENNIAL PROJECT – WORKING WOMEN’S COMMUNITY CENTRE MEETING PLACE

The WIC will work with Working Women’s Community Centre (WWCC), which is a non-profit and charitable organization, created in June 1976 in Toronto’s West End to help newcomer women with pre-employment and employment counselling. Today the Centre provides services in more than 25 languages and is a multi-service organization. Over 11, 000 women and their families use these services in four different WWCC locations within the GTA. WWCC programs include: Settlement Services for newcomers; Local Immigration Partnership; Language Instruction for Newcomers; Job Search Workshops for Newcomers; Employment Counselling and Placement Services; Seniors’ Wellness Programs; Tutoring/mentoring programs for immigrant children at risk of failing school; Home Instruction for Parents of Pre-school Youngsters (HIPPY); Women’s Support Groups; The Multicultural Community Garden; Community Engagement Activities (communication clubs, computer clubs, dance groups, yoga, conversation groups, etc.); Action for Neighbourhood Change, Victoria Village – Creating a Community Hub; Community Ambassadors Training Program and Seniors in Cyberspace.

Due to the extensive use of these programs the WWCC space on Gladstone Avenue has experienced significant wear and tear. Therefore, WIC will renovate and upgrade “The Women’s Meeting Place”.

Our $100K project covers the major costs to renovate and reconfigure the space for maximum use. We will: enhance ventilation; upgrade electrical; replace heating and cooling system; replace flooring; upgrade bathroom to make it child and senior friendly; enhance child care space; purchase necessary equipment, furniture and child care supplies; install a community kitchen, including industrial appliances, and refurbish the space. This will create a welcoming hub where women can not only connect but also secure important resources and supports that can make all the difference to their successful participation and integration into society.
