Biographies
Nira Roberts - 2024 Scholarship Winner
BSc Biology (Biomedical Science), Year 1
York University 2024 - 2028
Nira is a successful graduate of York Memorial Collegiate Institute. Just one week ago she began her university journey at York University. She intends to pursue an undergraduate degree in healthcare. Her career goal is to work in anesthesia or as a physiatrist. She describes herself as compassionate and empathetic. She is deeply motivated to help patients and she intends to tend to their medical needs with respect, compassion and patience.
Sawjana Rafique - 2023 Scholarship Winner
BSc Live Sciences, Year 2
University of Toronto 2023 - 2027
Sawjana has completed her first year of studies and she admits it was very challenging. She experienced some minor setbacks including having to change her major from the highly competitive MAT135. Sawjana is currently enrolled in a double major in Genetic Fundamentals & Application and Criminology & Social Legal Studies. As her journey continues into her second year, she is focused on maintaining her Dean's List standing. She is also excited to learn and have new experiences.
Veronica Luo - 2022 Scholarship Winner
BSc Psychology, Year 3
University of Toronto 2022 - 2026
Veronica attends the University of Toronto, Mississauga campus where she majors in psychology. She is working towards acceptance into the psychology specialist program which is her goal. Admission is very competitive but she is focused and driven by a career path that she believes will be very fulfilling.
Rachel Ma - 2021 Scholarship Winner
BSc SP Management, Year 4
University of Toronto 2021-2025
Rachel has completed 3 years of undergraduate studies in the Rotman Commerce program pursuing two focuses in Data Science and Marketing. She has maintained a 3.99 cumulative GPA.
Rachel has a passion for teamwork. In the first semester of her 3rd year, her team of 4 placed in the top 10 teams of teams around the world in the Creative Shock case competition, visiting Vilnius, Lithuania to compete in the final round. They earned the 2nd place title.
This past semester from January to May, Rachel participated on exchange at Sciences Po in Paris where she studied political science and lived alone for the very first time. Rachel completed her Summer in Ravenna, Italy where as a member of The Liquid Assets Dragon Boat team she competed and won three silver medals. She is looking forward to graduating in 2025 and pursuing a career in Commerce.
Gabrielle Cuff - 2021 Scholarship Winner
BA Arts & Science, Graduate 2024
University of Toronto 2020 - 2024
Gabrielle graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in June 2024. She received both honors and high distinction by finishing with a 3.71 GPA. She was also recognized as a Dean's List scholar, for the fourth consecutive year. She is currently employed at First National, a financial corporation, as an Associate Analyst. Alongside her new role in the financial corporate world, she is diligently preparing for the LSAT, with plans to take the exam in the Spring. She believes that balancing her professional responsibilities with LSAT preparation is both challenging and rewarding. It will allow her to apply her analytical skills to her future aspirations to become a lawyer.
Hshmat Sahak - 2019 Scholarship Winner
BSc Engineering, Graduate 2024
University of Toronto 2019 - 2024
Hshmat completed his undergraduate degree in the highly competitive Engineering Science program, obtaining a Major in Machine Learning and a Minor in Robotics and Mechatronics. He has consistently performed well, graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.99 and a 95% overall average. Throughout his undergrad career, he has completed internships at Nvidia, Google Brain, Vector Institute and Tesla. This fall, he will commence his masters degree at the Institute of Aerospace Science and Engineering, working on visual navigation of drones and using state-of-the-art models to improve the perception and planning modules of a mobile robot.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Hshmat remains committed to his executive role at NSight, a club devoted to providing academic, social and personal support for first and second year students in Engineering Science, easing their transition from high school to university. Hshmat will also be volunteering with MAX - Muslim Awards for Excellence, an organization with a vision to recognize and accelerate productive contributions made by Muslims in North America through academic and professional development.
The Rotary Club of Toronto Scholarship
Each year, The Rotary Club of Toronto Scholarship Working Group awards one four-year tuition scholarship of up to $15,000 per year to a deserving student. This scholarship program makes post-secondary education possible for young people who might not otherwise be able to continue their studies due to financial circumstances.
The scholarship is open to outstanding students graduating from the two main Toronto School Boards. Every year in February, we invite students who meet the criteria to apply. Visit the Rotary Club of Toronto website and see the application.
The student must demonstrate the following:
- financial need
- academic excellence
- leadership and community service
- graduation from a Toronto District School Board or Toronto Catholic District School Board secondary school
The members of The Rotary Club of Toronto Scholarship Working Group provide mentorship and professional contacts throughout the winner’s undergraduate journey. After graduation, the students can connect with our members for guidance and professional advice.
The first scholarship was awarded in 2012, and we are very proud of the success of our scholarship winners. They have proven by their academic excellence and community service that they are champions.
We wish to congratulate Nira Roberts who is the 2024 scholarship winner. She will receive up to $60,000.00 towards her tuition for the next four years. Our members are invested in Nira’s future success, and we look forward to having her join the group of previous winners.
