President Kevin thanked our musical guests from the Swedish Choir and Susan Howson introduced visiting Rotarians from India, Nigeria, Philippines and Scarborough.
We were reminded of the Sunday Brunch, meetings for chairs on October 22 and 23rd and the District Conference October 25-27.
Mark your calendars for our important Club Assembly on the evening of November 4th - RSVP through the office.

Jeff Dobson introduced our guest speaker Ilana Landsberg-Lewis and reminded us of her illustrious parents Michele Lansberg and Stephen Lewis. They instilled in her how important it is to work to benefit our fellow humans.
Ilana is a lawyer and has worked extensively for Women through the UN and Grandmothers for Grandmothers in Africa. She has worked with James Orbinski of Dignitas International on AIDS in Africa where 30 million have died.  To help we must get more ARVs - anti-retroviral medication - to the people as compliance can reduce HIV level to near zero, at which point the virus cannot be passed to others. It is the CBOs - Community Based Organizations - usually women, who are the linchpin.  They understand the gender discrimination.

Lawrence Foerster won the wine with the 6 of Clubs.

It is not every day that someone scores a hole in one!  Well done.

Sunday Brunch, October 6th
by Jackie Davies

Great fellowship & great food was enjoyed by 15 of us at the Guild Inn on Sunday.   After the brunch we strolled through the gardens where art meets nature and viewed the lake along the Scarborough Bluffs.

We are pictured in front of  the Greek amphitheater, one of the many pieces of architecture from demolished buildings from downtown Toronto.

WERM - Wednesday October 9, 2019
by Marg Stanowski
Dr. Wendy Cukier spoke passionately at our October 9th evening meeting on driving evidence based change.  As the founder and Academic Director at Ryerson University and Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy she is one of Canada's outstanding influencers of significant public policy... ranging from her longstanding work on Canada's gun registry, to advancing national transformation for diversity on boards and embracing technology to shape the future of work.

Wendy provided us a lens on strategy and levers for driving change in these 3 areas:  gun control, Syrian Refugees, and Bill C 25 to amend requirements for diversity on companies' Boards of Directors.  She shared some insights acquired through these journeys noting that evidence is important but insufficient and that politics is about politics: not the facts, not polls and not "doing the right thing".

In advance of the long weekend we were thankful to have an influential leader of social change as our speaker that day.

President Kevin was pleased to present a cheque for $15,200 to Jeremiah Kuria, Director of Ubuntu Life Foundation, Kenya. The funds were used to provide medication for the 50 severely disabled children they care for every day. Cijay Shah was responsible for contacts, fundraising and visiting the program this past year.  A Rotary trip to the site is under consideration.
